“ .jp” and “.co.jp” domains are 2 common types of domain names in Japan. To register for a general-purpose “.jp” domain name, one only requires a local address, which can be provided by an agent. The professional “.co.jp” domain name, however, is reserved for corporations and its registration is highly restricted. Registrants must be a Japanese company or a foreign company with a registered branch (or other valid Japanese business license) and furnish what is called 登記簿謄本 (toukibotouhon), which is a documentation equivalent to a company registration certificate. Furthermore, only one “.co.jp” domain is allowed per independent Japanese company.

As the registration of the “.co.jp” domain name is relatively more restricted in Japan than in other countries, the type of domain name your company possesses implies how ‘serious’ your Japan business is, and directly affects the impression of discerning Japanese companies and individuals who take care in selecting their business partners.
