  Prices for Japanese Domains Decline

The Japanese registry service (JPRS) announced on February that starting from March 26th both the registry fee and the renewal fee for general-use .jp domains shall be reduced from 3,000 Japanese Yen (JPY) to 2,500 JPY. The registry fee was last reduced in October 2004 from 3,500 JPY to 3,000 JPY. A year later in October 2005 the JPRS also revised the renewal fee to 3,000 JPY.

Furthermore, the JPRS published the latest statistical data with regard to .jp domains: As at February 1st, the cumulative total number of .jp domains (including .co.jp. domains) was 889,456, of which the number of .co.jp domains was 301,711. In total, the number of the .co.jp domains is 34 % of the .jp domains. Co.jp domains are domains eligible for companies established under Japanese law, such as the kabushiki gaisha (Japanese corporation), and Japanese companies incorporated under the new Japanese Company Act of May 2006. The number of the General-use .jp domains was 524,913, of which 399,546 were alpha-numeric domains and 125,367 were Japanese domains.
