In December 2006, the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) started a campaign to combat counterfeiting and piracy. A special campaign website was initiated and will be available until March 30, 2007 (http://www.kawanai.com). The campaign also included inter alia television commercials and advertisements in trains.
The main purpose of the campaign was to promote consumer awareness of counterfeiting and piracy issues. Its focus was to call attention to Japanese consumers to counterfeiting issues. According to a public survey conducted by the Japanese Cabinet Office in August 2006, 45.2% of the participants answered that they cannot resist buying counterfeit goods.
